Vowels

Vowel sounds in English are the sounds that contain the most variation.  Unlike languages like French, there are no accents to indicate which version of a vowel sound we use for a word, so it's not an easy thing to master.  However, there are SOME rules that apply more easily to short words than long, so, we'll see them here.

Les sons de voyelles en anglais contiennent le plus de variation.  Contrairement au français, il n'y a pas d'accents pour nous indiquer quel son utiliser pour une voyelle quelconque, alors ce n'est pas facile à maîtriser.  Par contre, il y a quand même quelques règles qui s'appliquent plus facilement aux mots courts qu'aux mots longs, alors nous les verrons ici.

The Rule

If a word has only one vowel, for example, cat, then the vowel uses a short sound.
Si un mot ne contient qu'une voyelle, comme dans cat, la voyelle sera courte.

If a word has two vowels, either together, like in aid, or separated by a consonant, as in ate, then the first vowel is long, and the second one is silent.
Si un mot a deux voyelles, ou bien ensemble, comme dans aid, ou séparées par une consonne, comme dans ate, alors la première voyelle sera longue et la deuxième sera silencieuse.

The same applies for longer words, only, you must separate it into syllables.  But beware, there are many many many exceptions.  So, this rule is more useful for short words, and as a general guideline.  For the rest, it's all about memorization!
Cela s'applique à des mots plus longs, mais il faut les séparer en syllabes.  Mais faites attentions, il y a plusieurs exceptions.  Donc, cette règle est plus utile pour des mots courts, et comme grande ligne.  Pour tout le reste, c'est la mémorisation!

AL / AR

In front of an [l] or an [r], the [a] becomes open.   Devant un [l] ou un [r], le [a] devient ouvert. Cliquez sur le mot "here" pour entendre les exemples suivantes.
Listen to the following examples here:
all, arm, ball, barn, car, call, fall, harm, karma, palm, talk, walk, wall.

Also note that the [l] in front of a [k], [m], or [d] (as in would and could) is silent.  Notez aussi que le [l] devant un [k], un [m] ou un [d] (comme dans would et could) est silencieux.

OL / OR

Often, [ol] sounds long even in words where there is only one vowel.
Souvent, le [ol] se prononce comme un son long même lorsqu'il n'y a qu'une voyelle dans le mot.
We say: old, cold, fold, hold, roll.    BUT!  we say doll. [dâwl]

At the end of a word [or] (also spelled [our] in Canada and the UK) is pronounced like the [er] in the word her; but at the beginning of a word, [or] is long.  Au début d'un mot, le [or] (aussi écrit [our] au Canada et en Grande-Bretagne) est prononcé comme le [er] dans le mot her; mais au début d'un mot, le [or] est long.

We say:  colour/color, favour/favor, flavour, flavor, odour/odor, savour/savor, tremor, director, actor.
But: ordinance, order, original.
